What checking is for
A useful watermark does not just say “copy”: it names a purpose. A payslip marked “exclusively for a rental application” has no business inside a credit application, and a tax notice marked for one letting agent, shown to another, is a reused copy. That mismatch is the signal, provided someone on the receiving end looks.
The purpose
Known wordings — Fili’s and the French state tools’ — are recognised in all five languages and reduced to the purpose they name.
The reference
The ref code stamped on the copy identifies that exact send. It is read from the file’s metadata, so it works on a photo too.
Nothing is sent
The file is read in your browser. No upload, no account, no install.
What it does not prove
Checking identifies a known marking; it does not authenticate the document. A watermark found means a known wording or marker is present in the file — not that the document is genuine, nor that it really came from the person who sent it to you. Equally, “no watermark found” does not mean the document is clean: it may simply not carry one.
On a photo with no reference in its metadata there is nothing to read without OCR, so the page hands you the two visual cues instead of drawing a false conclusion.
