Fili is a free Chrome extension that notices when you upload an ID card, a payslip or a tax notice — and offers to stamp a watermark across it before it is sent. Everything happens in your browser. Nothing ever leaves it.
Built for the French rental dossier
Renting a flat in France means handing a stranger — through a listing site, an agency, or plain email — your ID, three payslips, your tax notice, rent receipts, your employment contract… and the same again for your guarantor. It is the largest pile of identity documents most people ever send, to the least verified recipient. Identity theft from leaked rental dossiers is a risk documented by the French state itself.
A watermark such as “Document for a rental application only” makes a stolen copy very hard to reuse: nobody opens a bank account with it.

100% local. Fili's code contains no network call — no
fetch, no server, no account, no analytics. The reading engines
(OCR, PDF, HEIC) ship inside the extension.
- Your files never leave your browser. Analysis produces a verdict (“this looks like a passport”) and nothing else; extracted text is discarded immediately.
- Metadata is removed by default: EXIF and GPS from photos, title/author from PDFs — invisible fields that often carry your name.
- Minimal permissions: storage for your settings, and an invisible page for analysis. No history, no tabs.
- Anti-spoofing: while a genuine Fili dialog is open, the toolbar icon lights up — a web page cannot fake browser chrome.
How it works
- You upload a file, anywhere.
- Fili recognises it locally: file name, PDF text, or the machine-readable zone (MRZ) of a photographed document, read by bundled OCR.
- A dialog offers the watermark, with a live preview and editable text.
- You choose: watermark and send, send the original, or cancel. The site receives the file under its original name.

Frequently asked questions
Are my documents sent to a server?
No, never. Detection and watermarking run entirely in your browser. The code contains no network call — no fetch, no XMLHttpRequest, no WebSocket. No server, no account, no analytics.
How is this different from filigrane.beta.gouv.fr?
The official service uploads your document to its servers to watermark it, then deletes it. Fili does the same job without the document ever leaving your machine, and steps in automatically at upload time. Fili is independent, not affiliated with the French state.
Which documents does Fili recognise?
The full legal rental dossier (decree 2015-1437): ID card, passport, driving licence, residence permit, health card, RIB, payslips, tax notices, rent receipts, employment contract, CAF / France Travail statements, student card, Kbis, proof of address and property.
What if the file is called IMG_4021.jpg?
Fili also reads content, locally: PDF text layers, and the machine-readable zone (MRZ) of photographed passports and ID cards via bundled OCR. A photographed passport is recognised whatever the file is named.
Do agencies accept watermarked documents?
Fili defaults to the wording used by the French state's own tool, which agencies recognise. Some organisations (banks, public services) may still require a clean copy — Fili reminds you, and “send the original” is always one click away.
Why no digital signature?
Because nobody would verify it. The fraud at stake is the reuse of a stolen copy, and a visible watermark survives where a signature dies: the screenshot. French administrative documents already carry the one signature that matters — the 2D-Doc code signed by the issuing administration — and Fili's job is to preserve it, not to add another.
